FOR THE
DURATION OR…?

The handsack press Obelisk Press Facsimile Series Book 1
FOR THE DURATION OR…? was published by the Obelisk
Press in August, 1933. It is the most
rare of all Obelisk titles. The only
known copy is in the collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in
Paris. This facsimile is taken from
that copy. The BNF copy has been
rebound with the original stiff paper wrappers bound in and therefore the
original spine graphics are not visible. Thus the spine graphics on this facsimile
are patterned from other Obelisk Press issued titles of the same period.
Based on Delbos' own wartime experiences, FOR THE DURATION OR…? is a
semi-autobiographical first-person memoir of World War I as seen through the
eyes of a fictional Captain de Breuil. Although very well written, it is not
known why Jack Kahane chose to publish what would seem to be such an
un-sellable book. Friendship and a sympathy for the subject matter are the
likely reasons, as both Delbos and Kahane joined the Royal Fusiliers in August
1914, both spoke French, both became Captains and it's likely that they had
similar postings and indeed knew each other. The title of the book is taken
from the undertaking given by volunteers who signed up to fight in 1914 that
they would fight 'for three years or the duration of the war'.
