THE SPANISH EARTH

A Paperback Facsimile

The Spanish Earth was published in a limited edition of 1000 copies by the J. B. Savage Company of Cleveland in 1938.  In 1938 a Cleveland high-school student, Jasper Wood, persuaded Ernest Hemingway to allow publication of the transcript of Hemingway’s original narration for the film The Spanish Earth.  Wood took charge of the project and chose to have the book bound with endpapers and pastedowns decorated with the banner of the Spanish Anarchist Federation ("F.A.I" [Federación Anarquista Iberica]  - an organization to which Hemingway was fundamentally opposed).  After receiving a furious telegram from Hemingway, Wood destroyed most of the edition and reissued it with plain endpapers and pastedowns.  He also added a disclaimer statement on the rear pastedown.

This paperback facsimile was created by photographing both the original “bannered” edition and the “disclaimer” edition.  It includes the Spanish Anarchist Federation banner and the disclaimer.  This is one of only 200 copies published.
